Frequently Asked Questions

How does Equine Therapy work?

The way I do Equine Therapy, it works with the relationship between the client and the horse.  Humans, horses, and other mammals respond to each other at a nervous system level.  Horses give us instant feedback about what they perceive.  And a relaxed horse has a soothing presence that can be very healing.  Learning how to help a horse relax can be healing as well.  More details on Equine Therapy here.

Do you take insurance?

No I do not.  There are a couple of reasons for this. One is that insurance companies do not reimburse well for private individuals.  I want to provide quality care and not get burned out.  Another is that insurance set rules about length of treatment and treatment modalities, some companies will not reimburse for Equine Assisted therapy, even though I still provide the therapy that you would receive in an office.  The third is that I have to provide the insurance company with a diagnosis.  I try to work with what will make you feel better not what “is wrong” with you.  I can offer you a superbill that you can submit to your insurance to get payment for an Out of Network (OON) Provider. Contact your insurance to find out what your OON benefits are.  This superbill will also require a diagnosis in order for you to get reimbursement.

Who do you work with?

I do my best work people who are figuring out how their mental and emotional differences collide with the expectations of society.  Often there is a level of trauma there from years of trying to fit in with these expectations, or repercussions from not being able to fit in.  I often work with individuals who are Twice Exceptional or 2E.  This is someone who has gathered a lot of data about how the world works, has deep curiosity, and learns very fast.  But they also have some other kind of brain difference, which might carry a label of ADHD or Autism or might just be different in some unspecified way, that frequently gets in their way.  Frequently my clients struggle with anxiety or depression based on the information they take in about the world.  They have rich imaginations and are capable of accurate predictions that can at times feel overwhelming.

Who do you not work with?

There are some issues that I feel require specialized training that I do not have.

  • Severe  Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or OCD

  • Substance Use DisorderSevere

  • Eating Disorder

I can help you find someone who does have the training to work with these issues.
